A Poem for Grandparents by Mrs. Loftus
At this year’s Grandparents’ Day our Grade 5 students shared a special poem written by their teacher, Mrs. Loftus. The class recently studied the solar system and this poem connected what they learned in a unique way!
Our Solar System and You!
A poem for our grandparents by Mrs. Loftus
Pluto is 3 billion, 658 million miles from the sun,
It’s cold and dark and it’s just no fun,
Sometimes, we need our grandparents,
To show us the light and life of Jesus Christ.
Neptune is 2 billion, 780 million miles away,
It’s way too far and lonely to play,
But when Grandparents find time for a game,
Together we enjoy great fellowship same.
Uranus is 1 billion, 779 million miles - so far!
You can’t travel that by plane or by car,
Send us a card, with a stamp, in the mail,
Tell us how much Jesus loves us, as well.
From the sun, Saturn is 885 million miles,
Its rings tell a tale of love that smiles,
A covenant with us that God has made,
We won’t be scared, worried or afraid.
Jupiter is 483 million miles, getting sassy!
It’s large and in charge and so, so gassy!
I won’t say that’s Grandpa’s only charm,
But laughter and silliness make us feel warm.
From the sun to Mars is 141 million,
The closer we get, the warmer we’re feelin’,
Just like with Jesus, we need to get close
Like a cuddle with grandparents, we love the most.
Now Earth is the perfect distance at 93 million
The sun provides warmth, and light to a gazillion
Plants, creatures, and man, the perfect amount
To live, love and laugh, more than we can count.
Venus is 67 million miles, but the heat is horrid,
The sun is so hot, life can’t be supported.
At times, God uses Grandparents that are able
To bring life into difficult situations or trouble.
At 36 million miles, Mercury has temps
Of 870 degrees in its camps,
Being close to God keeps a fire in our heart,
We burn for His truth in others to start.
The sun holds the whole solar system together,
Gravity keeps planets in line, however,
We tend to stray, think our way is better,
Faithfully, point us to God, the center.
Thank you, Grandparents!!
