A Winning Season for The CCS Varsity Soccer Team

Goooooooooooo Lions!

Weaving together a team of mostly experienced and returning athletes, the CCS Lions soccer team embarked on their 2024 season with a hybrid of talent to contend for prominence in the NEACS League. Led by Coach David Sangster and Asst. Coach Ed Main (in their second year) the Lions have built a talented team with a core of 16 returning players, including a strong group of seniors. The team also included 6 Juniors, 7 Underclassmen, 5 homeschoolers and one 8th grade athlete.

After being shutout in the opener against the league’s defending champions, the team fused together a flurry of 58 goals against opponents across the next 14 games, winning 10 of them. During the same period the Lions allowed only 18 goals, mostly due to excellent goaltending by senior Carson Knowland. Top scorers included senior Jay Thiel (14), junior Javen Lundy (11), freshman Justin Lundy (8), senior Elyas Yoreo (6), freshman Riley Main (6) and junior Isaiah Rodriguez (5).

The Lions went into the NEACS Tournament ranked second and defeated #3 ranked Central Christian in the semi-finals to advance to finals. In the finals, the Lions faced the 3x defending champions, Emmanuel Christian, whom they tied in a recent match just prior to the tournament. In the end, Emmanuel was too much as Cornerstone took home second place in a hard fought match.

A few days later the season wrapped up with Senior Night against Masters, with the Lions winning the match 5-2.

Congratulations to our Lions on the most successful season in recent years and to this year’s seniors: Jay Thiel, Carson Knowland, Elyas Yoreo, Wes Schneider, Galilee Pfohl and (rookie) Manuela Faulk! Well done!
